25 Sep 2008Great quote about giving the “blessing” of your love and favor to your children ~
Do not kiss your children so they will kiss you back, but so they will kiss their children, and their children’s children ~ Noah benShea, poet, philosopher, author.
“Blessing” is not about me, and its not about my children only - its about the following generations. And with the blessing of family favor we pass to our children, we are passing forward our knowledge and experience with God. God designed the human race to “bless forward” to the next generation, in terms of love, education, inheritance, and spiritual formation.
“Blessing” is a generational gift - it doesn’t dead-end with just my three children - it will keep giving to each generation following.
But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children - with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts. Psalms 103:17-18
These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Deuteronomy 6:1-2
For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel

I just read recently that this is something that happens for some Jews on shabbat. At the dinner on this evening the father gathers each kid individually on his lap and says a prayer of blessing over them, according to their individual personalities and characteristics. They then end the dinner with a prayer that ends by saying…”we can not wait for the day to see you pray the prayers of blessing over your children at this table or yours.” This leaves the children imagining and dreaming of what it will be like one day to do the same.

how true, how sad that so many don’t get it. there is a line of family psychology that says it is extremely difficult to pass a blessing if you never received one. i hope i broke my family generational code and sent the blessing in spite of my history.

I think the best blessing we can give our kids is ourselves and our time. I always find there are many things to constantly try and keep me from giving them myself and my time. I hope these memories last them their entire lives and they pass it down to their children.
