The STaRS energy focus.

Last thought on Michael Watkins’ “STaRS” organizations in his book, The First 90 Days.

When walking into a new organization, we must decide how we focus our energy. We have two sets of choices:

1. How much emphasis will we put on “learning” as opposed to “doing”?
2. How much emphasis will be put on “offense” as opposed to “defense”?

Different organizations require different energy focus:

• START-UPS need more OFFENSE and more DOING
• SUSTAINING SUCCESS need more DEFENSE and more LEARNING
• REALIGNMENTS need more OFFENSE and more LEARNING
• TURNAROUNDS need more DOING and more DEFENSE

Here’s the question for church leaders: Do you need to be more focused on LEARNING or DOING? Do you need to be more focused on OFFENSE or DEFENSE?
