Investment of a life.

In: personal growth

10 Feb 2009

mighty_mattI don’t remember much about Junior High. It’s an awkward time for most of us. I’m sure I plodded through classes, struggled through acne, and stumbled through flirting with members of the opposite sex.

But I do remember 8th grade. I was drawn into an exciting student ministry group at church, full of dynamic rallies, activities, music, teaching, and serving team opportunities.

And in the middle of it all I remember Dave Adams.

Dave was a young student pastor, just in his early 20s, but he was a LEADER. He was my pastor through junior high and high school. I served as an intern in his ministry through college and seminary. He was one of the officiators at my wedding. I worked on his team at the Center for Youth Ministry at Liberty University for seven years.

Since 1978 Dave has developed and taught youth and family ministry courses at Liberty University, Lexington Baptist College and Southern Seminary. He has developed ministry training centers in Africa, Malaysia, Mexico, and Ukraine. His former students serve in all fifty states and five continents. This week he celebrates 10 years of leading the International Center for Youth Ministry at Southern Seminary and 30 years of recruiting, training, placing, and networking in youth ministry higher education and local church leadership.

But it is Dave’s personal investment in my life that I want to applaud. Many leaders have great visions for important kingdom works. But few have the shepherding skill to build people at the same time. I appreciate Dave’s leadership in these areas:

  • Vision for personal potential – When Jesus met His first students, He announced the potential He saw in each of them [John 1, Luke 5]. Dave had the vision to look at an eighth grader and see the kind of disciple and leader I could be.
  • Team building – I have always been an introvert and a little bit of a loner. But I learned how to function in a team starting in eighth grade. Dave built people into teams, forging their gifts into a ministry force.
  • High expectations – Because Dave has such strong vision, he’s not afraid to call his team to a high standard. Some leaders might coddle their “son in the faith” – not Dave. I always appreciated that he treated me as a man, and he expected quality work from me.
  • Entrustment with significant work – Early on Dave gave me important work to do. At the beginning of my senior year, he announced he was giving me a ministry team of several high schoolers to lead. I was somewhat overwhelmed, but it pushed me to the next level of growth.
  • Rest and celebration – Dave worked us hard – but he also knew how to play hard. He had a good sense of knowing when to take a break in the work and take the team out just to relax. He also understood the biblical concept of “remembering”. At the end of each project, each ministry year, he’d make us stop and smell the roses, to reflect on the work and celebrate God’s goodness.

Dave, you are a friend and mentor. I am thankful for your investment in my life and continued encouragement. I pray blessings on your life and ministry. I hope that I can pass the ministry baton that you’ve given me onto the next generation.21

Great post Matt. I always assumed your leadership skills were forged by your dad. It is interesting to learn that Dave influenced you in your earlier years. Since I have known you, you have made it look so easy to lead others.

Awesome, I can imagine that Dave has no idea just how many lives he has impacted over the years. Mine included!

Dave Adams is a true ministry hero. I’m sort of like a “grandkid” (since I was your student at Liberty…surely you don’t remember me) to Dave’s ministry.

I’ve had multiple opportunities to meet with Dave as a director of the CYM in Mexico City, and everytime, I walk away better for being with him.

Thanks for writing this. It’s true of him, and these things are things I want to mimic in my own life.

Ditto! I love that man!

Your not to bad yourself my friend. You are a gifted writer and communicator. You better get started writing more if you are going to double the amount of books, articles, and materials your dad has done. You are a blessing to many… me included!

Grace and Peace.

There isn’t enough words that can be said about the devotion, dedication, encouragement, and over all love that this man exhibited during our younger years. I too grew up with Matt in this department…back in the “good ol days”. Dave had a tremendous impact on my life. It was not easy being in a dysfunctional home with a Christian father and a non-Christian mother. Dave’s heart for me as an individual has never been forgotten. God used him in my life which enabled me to overcome what seemed to be obstacles that were “too big”!
Literally since I was the runt of the group for a long time. Dave I grew to be a big 5′ 10″… I really did. LOL Seriously though you will always have a special place in my heart. Blessings to you!

I met Dave because of a required Christian ministry at LBC. Wow! What an impact. He took me from youth in a “quarterly” Sunday School class (the way I grew up), to God as a lifestyle= God in all things, 24/7. He and Becky took me into their home and there I learned many amazing things. He told me to coach a Jr. High girls softball team…I’d never owned a glove. We may not have been all about softball, but we showed up…looking good…had a great time….and the best theme song, “I’m a Pepper, you’re a Pepper, wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper, too?” It was the end of the “Get All Excited” era. The Jr. High team was Dave, Stan Schock, Glenn Reese, & Gary Hunt. We also many great student leaders: Bob Miller, Bill Tinsley, Bob Lutz, Dave Koffman, Rick Wiita, and so many more.
The Holy Spirit used Dave & Becky as an inspiration for me, my husband, and now our kids (as we pass their teaching along) to love God and live our lives for him, whatever we’re doing. Thanks Dave & Becky. I love you!!

Dave Adams is the reason I went to Liberty. On the weekend I visited with my parents back in the Spring of 1990, we attended his Sunday School class after the campus church service. My parents were rather conservative and were somewhat unsure they wanted me to attend such a “liberal” school (yeah, right!). In his class, a regular feature was having guests to the campus stand and tell where they were from and why they were visiting. After the class, Dave sought us out and prayed with us. My mom burst into tears and my parents were profoundly moved this simple act of spiritual leadership. Instantly, my parents had peace that Liberty was were I should go to school. As a result, I enrolled the following fall, was called into the ministry while at Liberty and graduated in 1994. Thanks, Dave, for your spiritual sensitivity. In a single moment, you impacted my life forever!

Wow! I so value the friendships the Lord has allowed me to have over the years; so many contacted us in Louisville for the special February 11 recogonition and “Legacy Award” Among others, Matt’s generous words were offered during the chapel service. Believe it or not, it was an occassion that I lacked for words; probably to the amazement of those who know me so well. Humbling. I’m not as young as President Obama or as old as Senator McCain. My landing gear is still up and both thrusters are at maxium. May the Lord grant me the privledge to be used by Him. dea

Matt, I remember you not as an introvert, that’s for sure. When you were about 9th grade in the youth ministry, I was a freshman at Liberty and Dave Adams put me (a girl) as coach of 8 man football and basketball with young men from Monelison Jr. High and Linkhorne Middle. Other coaches included Mark Chaffin and Gary Hunt. Coaching changed my LIFE forever—I also worked with ScareMare—remember the great times there?—Vickey (Widner then) Ritchie
